Bali is a place that dreams are made off. It’s a dreamland with endless white sand, tropical creatures, coral ridges, jungle shelters, stone temples and mischievous monkeys. Ever since I can remember I wanted to visit Bali. I wanted to live there. My fascination with this Indonesian paradise came from nowhere with no apparent reasons. Imagine the excitement when a work opportunity came along on the shores of Bali. It was a dream come true.

Working on a photo shoot with WHITE MOSS and ALLERGRO, I had ample time to explore the island. Starting each morning with an invigorating yoga session, is a good way to unwind and enjoy the breathtaking sunrise over the Indian Ocean. Breakfast follows yoga. It is the best part of the day and can be summarized in two words: Smoothie Bowls. Smoothie bowls are vegetarian meals, mostly made from fruit and nuts. It’s delicious, healthy and filling. Self-proclaimed Smoothie Bowl shack, Nalu Bowls, is a smoothie delight! Nalu (Hawaiian word for wave) offers sweet and refreshing bowls for balmy Bali days. Fresh local ingredients are blended together in exotic recipes. Think dragon fruit, fresh coconut, mango, papaya, spinach and banana! Inspired by surfing culture, Nalu Bowls is the perfect pre- and post surf meal. Well-known for it’s surfing spots, you are guaranteed to spot aspiring surfers heading towards the beach to catch the best waves of the day. Each bowl at Nalu is named after surfing waves from around the world.

On days that I wasn’t working, I would hop on a scooter and explore the island. The dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the beaches offer the most spectacular views in Bali. Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Luluwate, is one of six key temples in Bali. It is perched on top of a steep cliff and believed to be one of Bali’s spiritual pillars. Puru Luhur Uluwatu is definitely one of the best places on the island to experience Balinese architecture, traditionally-designed gateways and early sculptures.

Sunny days progress into warm tropical nights. The weather is perfect for a night swim, walking the streets to find a trendy little restaurant or one of the many markets, shops or art galleries. The best shops in Bali open late and stay open until late at night. Even if shopping is not on your list of things to do, you will face interesting and tempting treasures. Bargaining for a delicately carved stone or woven fabric is normal practice. I walked away with some beautiful Vintage Century leather shoes and made a silent promise that I would bring Barry to Bali for his birthday. It is 8 months later, and we are on our way for a Barry Birthday Bash in Bali and I can’t wait to share this magical place with him.
